Descent
This novella takes place before the events of the first book, but I definitely think it should be read as it was published... after reading the first book.
In a lot of ways, I think I enjoyed the novella more than I did the first book. It takes place over a long period of time, but it also explores the mythology and back story of the series to come. We learn so much about some of the characters that we met in Hidden Wings and it answers a lot of questions about where things began before the time of the first book.
My Recommendation
It's a short read, but one that I think is important to the series. I almost wish it had been a full-length book in itself! I gave it 4.5 mugs.
